Reflective Research for AS Coursework

We intentionally chose 7 girl actors to subvert the stereotype of females as protagonists. We deliberately concentrated on the mise en scene of the protagonists room to create a messy desk so that we could go against the stereotype that teenage girls are neat and tidy and have pink walls. We thought the message was important to convey so that people will start to think differently about what girls should and shouldn’t do according to society, like wear dark clothing.

However we unintentionally portrayed the message that it is becoming more common for girls to use different types of technology whether that is coding, hacking, or gaming. We showed this by creating a ‘gamer room’ to end the stereotypes that girls are incapable of gaming.

Although this is only the opening scene we could add a voice over, perhaps of the protagonist speaking so the audience can get to know her better rather than guessing who she is.
As technology has advanced we could include more recent pieces of equipment as well as keeping with the retro style to incorporate binary opposites of gaming; being old and new devices. So that it is more relevant to the new generation of people who are watching our film yet also older audience members will still be able to relate to the love of gaming.
We could update some of the props used as well as changing the music so that it fits with the genre and pace of the clips better.
